About The Opportunity
Mentors provide committed, non-judgemental listening and support to young people aged between 11 and 25.
The aim of mentoring is to help participants identify and achieve their own goals to progress towards a healthier or more stable lifestyle. From school work to family friction and mental health issues.
Mentors meet with their mentees for around 1 hour a week whether just to chat, have a coffee or take part in a planned activity such as a walk or football
During this time volunteer mentors should aim to develop positive, supportive relationships with their mentee, to be a source of encouragement in order to help develop their self-esteem and confidence.
What we are looking for:
- Friendly, enthusiastic volunteers who are ready to listen.
- Volunteers should be ready and willing to pass on their own skills and experiences to participants and so help them to discover opportunities for themselves.
- To be a positive and active role model.
- To take part in supervision and training, including attending monthly group development sessions.
- To adhere to the policies and practices of the scheme, laid out in the Handbook. In particular, to safeguard the welfare of young people and their families.
- To keep records as required.
Practical Bits
Mentoring itself should take no more than about an hour a week plus perhaps a check in on the phone to The Door's team leader. We also encourage volunteers to take part in monthly Group Development sessions which happen once a month
Mentoring sessions take place in a public place, this could be in a cafe, at The Door or on a walk.
Full training will be given and consists of 5 weekday evenings 7-9pm and 1 Saturday morning sessions 9:30am - 1:30pm
If you are unable to make all sessions a catch up will be provided.
We ask volunteer mentors to make an initial commitment of 6 months, supporting an individual weekly.
