Summary

Be a Champion for Young Families and help to ensure that children get the best start in life. Listen, Support, Empower. Make a difference!

Detailed description

Just 2–3 hours a week can make a meaningful difference in the lives of families.

As a Home-Start volunteer, you’ll be matched with a family and visit them in their home, offering compassionate, confidential support during times of need. You’ll be alongside them, a listening ear, and a helping hand. We’ll provide you with full training and continuous support from our dedicated team.

At Home-Start Stroud and Gloucester, we’re building a community where everyone feels welcome, seen, and valued for who they are.

We’re committed to creating an inclusive and diverse volunteer team people of all ages and walks of life and particularly encourage applications from people who are currently under-represented.

To become a Home-Start volunteer, you’ll need to have parenting experience or have cared for children in a meaningful way.

Most importantly, you’ll bring empathy, patience, and an understanding of the ups and downs that come with raising children—because you’ve lived it yourself. That shared experience is what helps build trust and makes your support so powerful.

What you can offer a family as a Home-Start volunteer:

  • A kind, listening ear and practical support.
  • Visits to families in their homes, where dignity, respect, and identity are at the heart of everything we do.
  • Reassurance that parenting can be challenging—and that no one has to do it alone.
  • Encouragement to recognise and celebrate the positives in family life.
  • A supportive relationship built on trust, shared time, and understanding.
  • Emotional support that builds on parents’ own strengths and promotes family wellbeing.
  • Help in connecting with local communities and accessing other services and networks of support.

You can help a family take steps toward positive change.

Come and join our Home-Start family — make real connections, and be part of something meaningful.

If you’re interested in learning more, just click ‘Join’ to answer a short question, and a member of our team will be in touch to talk through the next steps.
