We are looking for knowledgable volunteers who feel comfortable leading a walk for up to 20 people at a time on one of our reserves and other areas of the county. Our walks start at 10am, but we ask our volunteers to be available from before to greet the attendees as they arrive.
What is meant by knowledgable?
- We are looking for knowledge of the landscape, our reserves and the wildlife you will see on these walks.
- You don't need to have knowledge in all 3 areas but at least one. (I.E you know the history of Greystones to a great depth but not about the wildlife on site or you know lots about the wildlife in the severn area but haven't visited one of our reserves so don't have much knowledge)
What will be expected from you? -
You are the host of this event, and the walkers are your guests (so please make them feel welcome!)
- Liaise with Visitor Programme Manager regarding route to be taken
- Check people into the event
- Pop into one of our Gateway Sites (Robinswood Hill, Crickley Hill or Greystones Farm) to collect things like first aid kit ahead of the walk (we might be able to arrange other locations for this)
- Lead a guided walk, pointing out areas of interest and answering questions to the best of your ability
- You will need to do an on-the-day assessment to consider things like the weather - training will be provided on how to complete this.
- Ensure general safety of walking party
- Report back at end of event as to attendee numbers
A First Aid certificate is required to be held either by walk leader or back marker. We will fund this if you don't have one already.
What can you expect from Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust?
- We will arrange the route for you or plan it in assocation with you (whichever you prefer)
- We will advertise the walks
- We will contact the attendees and deal with bookings
- We will supply a risk assessment for the activity (though you will need to do an on-the-day assessment to consider things like the weather - training will be provided)
- We will give you an attendee list
- We will provide a first aid kit
Perks and Benefits
Free Attendance on another walk
Skills You'll Need
Knowledge of landscape/wildlife/reserves
Travel Information
Due to the nature of our sites (pun intended!) they tend to be inaccessible by public transport. You will need to consider this, and have means of getting to your proposed walking site, whether it be by foot, car, bike etc.
