Do you want to become a guardian of your local river?

Do you want to learn about a fun and scientific method of surveying the health of your river?

Do you want to learn more about freshwater invertebrates that act as the canaries to river health?

You may wish to find out more about the Riverfly Partnership and the Riverfly Monitoring Initiative!

There are currently active volunteers carrying out monthly surveys in the river Frome’s catchment and we are recruiting more to widen our survey area on the Frome and its tributaries. We will be holding a ‘Taster’ session on Riverfly monitoring. This will cover the basics around site selection, risk assessments, survey methodology, invertebrate ID training, and more information about the Riverfly Partnership. At the end of the session, if you’re still interested in surveying your local river, we can provide information on official training sessions in your local area.

During the session we’ll be chatting to some of the current volunteers who monitor the Frome. They will pass on some of their knowledge and useful pieces of advice and tips they’ve learned since they’ve taken the training.

Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust Project Officer Kai’a will meet you there before the 10-minute walk over to the surveying site.

Please bring with you:

Waders if you have them – we have some pairs you can borrow if you don’t have any.

Any refreshments that you may require during the 3-hour session.

Clothing for any weather.

Any glasses that you may need for viewing things up-close.
