Summary

Help run a boccia club, assisting with the admin & organisation that supports the Friday evening club. Learn a new sport, make new friends & have fun!

Detailed description

Cotswold Crusaders Boccia Club meet at Leisure At Cheltenham on Fridays from 5pm to 7pm. Boccia is an inclusive sport similar to bowls or boules, which is played from a seated position making it ideal for wheelchair users. It is played internationally and at the Paralympics and many of our players are highly competitive. It can also be played socially and just for fun and our club also gives an opportunity for a sociable evening chatting over a game of boccia.

All the club coaches and leaders are volunteers, with the activities often supported by Glos Uni sports students on placements. However, the number of players has grown recently and we are looking to expand the number of volunteers supporting the club admin and governance to share the workload, give more depth, ensure the continuity of the club and enable us to take advantage of more opportunities as they come along.

How to get involved:

We would strongly recommend coming to a few of the Friday night sessions to meet everyone, learn about the club and learn more about the game of boccia. However, in the long run, helping as an admin volunteer does not carry an essential need to attend the club on a weekly basis. Admin tasks or roles would be handed over in a controlled way once all the requirements had been fully discussed and can mainly be carried out in your own time.

What you could do:

Help take the register at sessions and help the Treasurer monitor the payment of subs.

Manage the registering of players with Boccia England and the club's own membership records.

Maintain a list of volunteer training and book refresher courses as needed (eg safeguarding, first aid)

Review and update policies and procedures (sg safeguarding), using Boccia England documents as a template

Organise ordering of club T shirts & other kit

Organise club social events

Organise fundraising events and/or co-ordinate and maintain existing fundraising initiatives

Join the committee to help make decisions about the club and drive future direction.

Attend club sessions from time to time (if not weekly) to maintain links to the players and the activities on the ground.

Maintain contact with the leaders and committee members outside of club sessions.

It could also include:

Representing the club at local community and networking events

Supporting players, coaches or the wider boccia community at competitions at events locally or nationally

Getting involved with the weekly club activities helping players and/or coaches during the sessions (see also Boccia Club Activity Volunteer)

What you will get:

New skills, new friends, new sport - a lot of fun!

Satisfaction from contributing to the smooth running of an organisation

Pride in being part of a successful club and in seeing players win medals and develop skills both on court and for life in general

Appreciation from all the players who enjoy the sessions

Sessions run nearly all year round with spring breaks for Gold Cup week and Good Friday, a summer break of around 4 weeks and a short break at Christmas. The level of commitment can be adjusted according to your skills, interests and time available. Attendance at some club sessions will be useful to liaise with players or volunteers on admin matters but this need not be every week unless you want to. Any of the admin roles can double up with helping regularly at club sessions if you choose.

We are very welcoming and anyone interested can arrange to come and have a chat and meet us without making any commitment. Feel free to ask any questions.

We look forward to hearing from you
