We need an experienced person to carry out all aspects of financial management, including paying our suppliers and preparing our accounts and forecasts.

We are a small museum with correspondingly small financial balances and transactions but, as a charity, we have to manage and account for our finances as carefully as a large company.  There's more to the role than just counting a bit of cash and adding up a few figures, which is why we need someone with suitable training and experience.

Also, if we're successful in obtaining a National Lottery grant  our bank balance and income and expenditure could increase tenfold over their historical levels.  In fact, a grant application will only be successful if we can demonstrate we have the financial competence necessary to manage such funds.

We currently bank with HSBC and use their online system to manage our banking, including making payments.  Our existing treasurer uses a (rather large) spreadsheet to record transactions and produce our accounts, budget and forecasts.  His successor may prefer to replace this with and accounting software package.

The treasurer needs to lead on all financial matters, including helping other trustees appreciate the need to spend or to save money as appropriate, taking account of our reserves and likely income and expenditure over the next five years.

Key activities include:

  • Manage bank accounts and card machines
  • Collect income including visitor donations and proceeds from events , both cash and card
  • Pay suppliers
  • Prepare and present quarterly and annual accounts, an annual budget and regular forecasts
  • Claim gift aid
  • Assist with grant applications, manage funding and help prepare reports to the donor

Requirements:

  • An accounting or bookkeeping qualification and experience
  • An interest in museums and/or Tewkesbury and its history

To get you up to speed, we will provide an induction which includes a tour of our museum and an introduction to our museum, guidance on trustee responsibilities, background reading and a detailed handover by our current treasurer.
