Role Specification

Role: Website Developer and Social Media Developer

Background

The Jet Age Museum is an entirely volunteer run charity operating as a registered company (Gloucestershire Aviation Collection) located at the Meteor Park, Staverton. We depend upon donations from visitor and benefactors for contributions necessary to cover operating costs.

The museum operates based upon opening days at weekends and certain mid-week days (e.g. half-term) with a range of special events throughout the year (e.g. Armed Forces Day, Battle of Britain. It also has a number of “Outreach” events throughout the year which are essentially offsite events where we support local communities and special events.

Scope

The museum invested in a significant upgrade to its website, via its website service provider Digitel (Gloucester), in 2024 however this was in effect a “Phase 1” exercise with additional functionality planned as part of further developments.

The website requires continuous updates necessary to post events and news, however, this should only require a couple of hours a month.

In addition our social media sites which include Facebook (Meta), Twitter (X), Instagram and Linked-In all require development and maintenance.

There is scope for creative input to support the development of all of the museum’s various media outlets.

The role

Currently members of the External Affairs team that have responsibility for all media maintain and update on an “as required” basis, however, the EA team does not possess the depth of experience necessary to provide overall support and development.

The key areas of the website administration role are defined as follows:

·        Day-to-day admin of the JAM website with event updates, news and overall brand development

·        Expansion of services offered via the website e.g. blogs, online purchasing of shop goods, improved membership benefits and links to various events/social media.

·        Monitoring of all website traffic via e.g. google analytics and presentation of feedback regarding key metrics.

·        Providing creative ideas for the expansion of the museums reach and appeal across all market sectors via website and social media.

·        To be a key member of the External Affairs team advising on website and all social media.

·        To work with our website service provider, Digitel, in further developing the website.

Experience

The key elements of experience necessary to undertake this role are listed as follows:

·        Ideally experience with WordPress (or similar) which is the underlying software hosting platform for the website.

·        Experience with the use of social media platforms specifically with the aim of increasing/expanding “hits” across key market sectors.

·        Knowledge and/or experience with website “tools” such as Google Analytics, SOE and others.

·        Some experience with use of media creation/presentation tools such as PowerPoint would be of benefit.

Skills

Key skills can to some degree be acquired “on the job” however, the following are required

·        An ability to work as part of a team with good communication skills

·        An ability to work on one’s own initiative with limited oversight and/or guidance on a day-to-day basis.

·        A thirst/desire to expand one’s knowledge base in a fast-moving technical area relating to IT and website development.

Other considerations

This role would ideally suit an individual who is keen to develop their experience and skills in all aspects of website and social media development and who can spare 3 – 5 hours per month to support the museum.

It is not necessary to have an engineering or aviation background although this would be an added benefit.

The museum may be able to offer some level of training for a candidate who is prepared to make commitment to the role.

Getting there

Location: Jet Age Museum is at Meteor Business Park, off Cheltenham Road East (the B4063), on the north side of Gloucestershire Airport. Look for the traffic lights between the large white Safran building and the Ontic building. Turn off the main road into Meteor Business Park at the lights and the Museum’s blue gates will be on your right. The address is: Meteor Business Park, Cheltenham Road East, Gloucester GL2 9QL. If using the What Three Words app, the square just in front of the main Jet Age Museum gates is shift.secretly.influence There is no pedestrian or vehicle access to the Museum from the Airport. If using a Satellite Navigation System and postcode, please note that this will take you to the eastern entrance of Meteor Business Park from where you will need to follow either the main road or the internal Business Park road westbound until you arrive at Jet Age Museum at the western end of the Business Park.

About Jet Age Museum

We celebrate Gloucestershire’s rich aviation heritage from the early days of flight, through the birth of the Jet Age to the present day.

Jet Age Museum is staffed only by volunteers, some of whom flew in aircraft we have on display. Come and visit, ask questions and learn about the history of aviation in Gloucestershire and beyond. We aim to preserve the past and inspire the future.
