Summary

CPRE Gloucestershire are looking for a new Chair to lead our charity during this challenging time for our countryside.

Detailed description

Never has our beautiful Gloucestershire countryside been under so much threat from the pressures of Government to build. At the same time, it is essential that we provide the housing, energy needs, transport links and other supporting services to allow our countryside to thrive. CPRE Gloucestershire needs to be at the forefront of this debate.

We are now seeking an individual who has the experience and leadership skills to lead the charity during this challenging time for our countryside.

About us

The Campaign to Protect Rural England has worked for almost a century to support and promote the countryside and aim to do this for generations to come. We believe in countryside and green spaces that are accessible to all, rich in nature and playing a crucial role in responding to the climate emergency. CPRE is a national charity with branches in 42 counties.

CPRE Gloucestershire is an independent charity led by an experienced Board and over 600 members. The charity is run on a day-to-day basis by a part-time Business Manager and a full-time Communications and Development Executive.

About the role

The Chair role will suit someone living in Gloucestershire who has a keen interest in the countryside and is excited by the prospect of helping to direct the future of CPRE Gloucestershire over the next 6 years. It is an exciting time to join our team, as CPRE nationally is celebrating 100 years in 2026 and CPRE Gloucestershire will be celebrating its centenary in 2028.

As Chair you will:

  • lead our Trustee board, running our quarterly meetings and AGM
  • lead the implementation of our new 3-year business plan
  • provide leadership to our business manager and members of staff
  • determine how we run our districts and committees, in particular our committee that focuses on policy
  • be the face of CPRE Gloucestershire, liaising with members, volunteers and stakeholders and partners.
  • forge new partnerships to increase the awareness of the charity and what we stand for
  • work with National CPRE and the South West group to coordinate activities
  • direct our important campaigns, engaging the local community and raising awareness of the issues that the countryside faces
  • ensure that we as a charity meet our legal requirements, adhering to our governing document, and have the necessary policies and resources

We estimate that the time commitment will be around 4 days a month, although this is variable and dependent on activities. You can of course do more if you wish!

This is a volunteer role in which you can really make a difference. We welcome applicants of any age, gender and background.

We have been exceptionally fortunate to be guided by Patricia Broadfoot CBE, whose inspiring leadership and steadfast commitment have set a gold standard for our organisation. Patricia’s vision and dedication have not only strengthened our governance but also elevated our impact and reputation across Gloucestershire. Patricia is required by our Constitution to step down at the AGM next summer. We anticipate a 3-6 month handover so would like the new Chair on board by March 2026.
