Our Social Buddies programme brings together adults with learning disabilities and local volunteers who share similar interests and hobbies.
Social Buddy pairs spend time together in the community doing activities they both enjoy, helping to build friendships, confidence, and connections.
We are looking for volunteers who can spare a few hours each month to support someone to feel less isolated and more connected to their local community.
This role is focused on friendship and enjoying leisure activities together. Volunteers are not expected to provide personal care, administer medication, or undertake any form of support work.
We encourage our Social Buddies to share their passions and interests with one another—just as friends do. Activities might include:
- Going for coffee or lunch
- Shopping trips
- Going to the cinema
- Walks in the local area
- Visiting local attractions
- Attending community events
- Taking part in hobbies and shared interests
Every friendship is different, and we encourage buddies to explore activities they both enjoy.
What we offer
- Training to help you support adults with learning disabilities
- Ongoing support from the Building Circles team
- Opportunities to take part in a range of volunteer social activities
- Reimbursement of expenses, including travel costs (up to £20 per outing)
No previous experience is required.
Our next volunteer training session will take place on 11th August 2026. If this date is not suitable, we can arrange an alternative weekend training session where required, so please don't let this put you off applying.
Join us and make a real difference by helping someone build meaningful connections, gain confidence, and enjoy the things they love.

About Building Circles
Building Circles supports adults with learning disabilities in Gloucestershire to form and maintain meaningful friendships. Our Social Buddies, Gig Buddies and Football Buddies programmes connect adults with learning disabilities to local volunteers. Our Buddies then go out into the community to do things they enjoy - together. Our volunteers also support our other groups, such as our Allotment Groups and Art Group. We aim to enable adults with learning disabilities to live a more meaningful life, and volunteers are at the heart of what we do. In exchange for your volunteering time, we offer training and ongoing support, as well as reimbursement of expenses and opportunities to join our team at a range of social events.
