Thriving Through Recreation exists because, quite simply, we believe in every single child and young person.

And we believe in the extraordinary power of recreational learning.

Our charity was founded after decades of work with vulnerable children and young people navigating difficulty, crisis, and trauma.

These wonderful children and young people bounced around services and professionals, who diligently developed and facilitated early intervention support to help them build the resilience, self-efficacy, independence, and problem-solving confidence they needed to navigate tough times.

Time and again, one of the most effective support strategies was enabling that child or young person to regularly participate in an activity that enthused them.

So whether they were pulling out their paint brushes, scaling climbing walls, or learning to play chart-toppers, these recreational activities gave them time away from difficulties and a place to take charge of their learning. They could experience new environments, explore new skills and join new communities.

The inherent freedom and informality of this recreational learning gave children and young people valuable space to have fun, figure out who they are, and discover where their skills lie.

Unfortunately, financial and social barriers often prevent it from happening. While many children and young people in the UK can access recreational activities seven days a week, there are others who, sadly, cannot access any.

We believe in fixing this unfairness and expanding recreational learning to everyone, especially those navigating adversity.

Thriving Through Recreation helps remove barriers to participation, enabling every child or young person to access the recreational learning they need to thrive, no matter what life throws at them.
