Kennel Volunteer

Who we are: Teckels is a small, independent charity nestled in the heart of Whitminster, Gloucestershire, but our impact reaches far beyond our size. Our dedicated animal rescue and rehoming centre is committed to providing a safe haven for homeless cats and dogs, where they can receive the care and rehabilitation they need to find their forever homes. Since our establishment in 2003, we have had the privilege of supporting around 250 cats and 150 dogs each year. As a small, independent charity, we are reliant on donations, grants and volunteers to operate. 

What we’re looking for: Someone passionate about dogs and their welfare to support our centre staff in the day to day care of our rescue and boarding dogs. 

Tasks will vary depending on the time of day, but you could be helping to get dogs ready for the day or wind down on an evening. Topping up water bowls, helping with feeds, cleaning kennels, and washing up. Walking, socialising and playing with dogs. Helping with laundry to wash the many towels and bedding our dogs and cats use in a day. 

This could be the role for you if you enjoy being around dogs and helping with their care. There is a lot of independent working, so you will need to be able to use your initiative, and be willing to get stuck in. It is essential you are able to follow instruction from staff and be confident to report any concerns. 

Due to the nature of the animals we care for, you will need to have previous experience with dogs. This could be through having your own dogs, spending time with them on a regular basis, or previous work experience. You'll need to have an understanding of dog behaviour, body language, and be able to respect the dogs' needs. Full safety training will be given before spending time with the animals. 

When you can help: Volunteer shifts are any time between 7am-7pm Monday-Sunday. This also includes holidays like Christmas Day and Easter. We are especially looking for help on weekends.
