About us

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea — but our work doesn’t stop at lifeboats and lifeguards. We’re also passionate about preventing emergencies before they happen.

Our Water Safety team works with communities and partners to reduce preventable incidents in coastal and inland waterways – from the seaside to rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and canals. We develop Water Safety Lifesaving Plans that focus on local risks and help people enjoy the water safely.

About the Role

As a Water Safety Adviser, you’ll be part of a friendly, motivated team bringing life-saving advice directly to the public. You’ll help spot local risks, share safety tips, and work with local organisations to make a real difference.

If you’re passionate about helping people stay safe in, on and around the water, we’ll support you to build your water safety knowledge and share clear, simple and effective messages. All we ask is that you bring a willingness to learn, connect with others, and make a difference in your community.

What you’ll do

  • Chat with members of the public to share RNLI safety messages
  • Seek opportunities to promote water safety at local events, schools, and community spaces
  • Build positive relationships with community groups, clubs, and partners
  • Attend regular water safety team meetings
  • Take part in other RNLI activities when needed

What you’ll bring

  • An open, friendly approach to engaging with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Willingness to learn about local water safety risks and prevention
  • Enthusiasm for helping others stay safe in, on, or around water

What’s in it for you

  • Be part of an inclusive, supportive team that values every volunteer
  • Learn new skills and build confidence in public speaking and community engagement
  • Build your experience and enhance your CV.
  • Meet new people and make lasting connections while saving lives.
  • Receive full training and have reasonable expenses reimbursed

Whether you’ve been around water your whole life or are completely new to it, if you care about keeping people safe and want to help your community, we’d love to hear from you.

Diversity at the RNLI

We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards Our Vision: To save Every One.
