Detailed description

About the Role

As a Great Western Hearts Defib (Circuit Breaker) Volunteer for Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC), you’ll play a crucial part in keeping our community defibrillators rescue ready — ensuring lifesaving equipment is available when it’s needed most.

Working with our GWAAC Hearts team, you’ll help check, clean, and report on community defibrillators across your local area using our online system. This role is flexible and ad hoc, ideal for someone who enjoys being out and about, has great attention to detail, and wants to help save lives in their community.

Your efforts help ensure every defib in our network can give someone the best chance on their worst day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Check defibrillator cabinets and devices when needed, following GWAAC’s guidance and checklist
  • Carry out visual checks on the cabinet and lock, ensuring everything is clean and in good working order
  • Confirm device status (rescue ready), pad expiry dates, and cabinet code accuracy
  • Take and upload photos of the cabinet, device, and any issues found
  • Record check details on Basecamp and The Circuit (national defibrillator database)
  • Report any faults, damage, or missing equipment to the Hearts team
  • Represent GWAAC professionally in the community while performing check

Requirements

  • Access to a smartphone (for photos) and an internet browser (for Basecamp)
  • Confident using online tools and following digital instructions
  • Reliable, observant, and able to work independently
  • Comfortable travelling locally to check defibs (flexible around your location)
  • Willing to complete short online training via phone or Zoom
  • Passionate about helping others and supporting GWAAC’s lifesaving mission

Our Values

At GWAAC, our work is guided by values that shape everything we do:

We are compassionate

We are dedicated

We are curious

We are collaborative

As a Hearts Defib Volunteer, you’ll bring these values to life every time you check a defib and support your community

Additional Information

All training, guidance, and equipment (including GWAAC ID, lanyard, and cleaning kit) will be provided. This is an ad hoc, flexible role — you can take on as many or as few checks as you like. Volunteers will be expected to follow safeguarding and data protection policies to ensure the safety and confidentiality of all involved.
