Summary

We have ambitious plans to grow our Collection & are seeking an enthusiastic person, to join us as Chairperson of the Collections Advisory Board

Detailed description

Hundred Heroines is the UK’s only charity dedicated to promoting women in photography. We have ambitious plans to grow our Collection & are seeking an enthusiastic person, to join us as Chairperson of the Collections Advisory Board

Background

At the end of 2021, we started collecting objects, prints and ephemera for the Heroines Collection that forms the core of our museum in Gloucester. The Collection is an unusual way to learn more about the work of today’s outstanding women artists, and forms the basis of our educational programme.

Each object relates to an artist’s practice in some way, and the stories attached to the objects provide a unique insight into the work of the Heroines. From a birdcage salvaged from a skip to antique silk pyjamas, every item is imbued with meaning. The array of riches, both humble and profound, recount the stories of some of today’s most significant artworks.

In April 2022, we became the sole custodians of the archive of pioneering photographer, Elisabeth Buchmeyer Lewis, and earlier this year we also acquired Renate Bertlmann’s Knife Rose, to coincide with the arrival of the Knife Angel in Gloucester, as part of its National Anti-Violence Tour.

What will you be doing?

•   Leading the advisory board on making acquisition decisions

•   Advising our trustees on what objects, artwork etc. to acquire

•   Planning and executing fund-raising events to help raise the profile of the museum and  The Collection

What are we looking for?

You don’t need to have a background in arts, though an interest in it would be beneficial. It doesn’t matter if you have prior work experience or not. We are looking for someone with an attitude to make a difference. And enthusiasm … lots and lots of it!

The role involves convincing people to spend money for the sake of art and creativity. So, you’ve got to be an excellent communicator, with great powers of persuasion.

To do the role justice, we are looking for someone who believes that women artists need to be given their due, and who is willing and wanting to contribute towards making that happen. We will provide all the training needed for you to excel in this role. You just need to bring that energy to our organisation.

So, if this sounds like you, or if you know of people who could be the right fit, get in touch!

About Hundred Heroines

Hundred Heroines (HH) is the only UK charity (registered charity number: 1190277) dedicated to advancing public awareness of women in photography. Leading women photographers (the ‘Heroines’) challenge how we see the world, push artistic and social boundaries and highlight issues of inequality. We provide an accessible and varied programme of creative, social and educational activities and opportunities, particularly empowering for young women.

Our vision is the universal recognition of women in photography – past, present & future. Our mission is to connect people with the visual arts and to share opportunities for diverse communities to celebrate women in photography.
